Skid vs Pallet: What's the Difference?

The terms 'skid' and 'pallet' are often used interchangeably, but they're actually different. Understanding the distinction helps you choose the right platform for your shipping and storage needs.

The Key Difference

A skid has no bottom deck boards. A pallet has both top and bottom deck boards.

Think of a skid as the original, simpler version of the pallet. It's essentially a pallet without the bottom layer of boards.

What is a Skid?

A skid (also called a 'single-deck pallet') consists of:

  • Top deck boards
  • Stringers or runners underneath
  • No bottom deck

Advantages of Skids

  • Lower cost: Uses less material
  • Lighter weight: Easier to handle manually
  • Can be dragged: Useful for certain applications
  • Lower profile: Takes less vertical space

Disadvantages of Skids

  • Not stackable: Difficult to stack loaded skids
  • Less stable: Products can shift during transport
  • Limited racking use: May not work with all pallet racking

What is a Pallet?

A pallet has both top and bottom deck boards, creating a more robust platform.

Advantages of Pallets

  • Stackable: Can stack loaded pallets safely
  • More stable: Better weight distribution
  • Universal compatibility: Works with all forklifts and jacks
  • Better for racking: Designed for warehouse storage

Disadvantages of Pallets

  • Heavier: More material means more weight
  • Higher cost: Uses more lumber
  • Cannot be dragged: Bottom boards would be damaged

When to Use a Skid

Skids are ideal for:

  • Permanent fixtures: Machine bases, equipment stands
  • One-way shipping: Disposable transport platforms
  • Dragging applications: Where pallets would be damaged
  • Low-height storage: When vertical space is limited

When to Use a Pallet

Pallets are better for:

  • Stacking goods: Warehouse storage, container loading
  • Automated handling: Conveyor systems, AS/RS
  • Pallet racking: Standard warehouse setups
  • Repeated use: Closed-loop supply chains

Regional Terminology

In everyday use, many people call any shipping platform a 'pallet' regardless of its actual construction. The distinction matters most in:

  • Purchasing and procurement
  • Engineering specifications
  • International shipping documentation
